Scratching the surface
26 March 2009

Durban has given a lot to the South African art industry. It has somehow become an acceptable norm that Durban feeds the rest of the country with skilled and experienced creatives. The upcoming exhibition at Kizo is no exception as it brings 5 women artists who are coming to their own and once again a proof of this growth.

Their names are as follows. Lara Mellon, Maggie Strachan, Joan Martin, Lesley Magwood-Fraser and Rene Leslie Over years the five exhibiting artists have steadily earned their worth in the Art industry of KZN and are steadily starting an international career.

Two of the exhibiting artists have collaborated in two international shows, one of them being hos

ted in London and the other in Germany. The two artists are Lara Mellon and Maggie Strachan.

Both Lara and Maggie bring their international experience to this exhibition. All five artists share a passion for the landscape in more ways than one and one can easily acknowledge that as a common thread to their practice and the one that gave birth to this collaboration

Water color society of South Africa (81st National)
19 February 2009

After a long and worthwhile wait the Water color Society of South Africa is bringing to Kizo their highly anticipated national exhibition. The Society is amongst a few surviving art societies left in South Africa and has over the years proven to be a much needed network for artists in general.

Due to the high quality of works presented for auction at Sotheby's in JHB a couple of months ago, one can expect the same standard in the show, if not better. The medium of watercolor painting is extremely challenging and one that requires a lot of skill and patience. Because of the diverse membership base of the society we can expect a variety of works reflecting the diversity and interests of the artists belonging to the society.

We at Kizo are especially proud to be hosting this ground breaking exhibition.

Wakaba Mutheki and friends
15 January 2009

Known as the African Van Gogh, Wakaba Mutheki continues to grow from strength to strength and his work now graces the walls of private and public collections the world over.

Kizo Art Gallery wishes to celebrate this artist in a unique exhibition that will see him exhibiting side by side with his colleagues Elga Rabe, Barbara Ploner and others. The exhibiting artists work differently in their style and medium, however they all share a common thread in their subject matter which is their love for the continent of Africa. The work on show varies from portraiture and landscape to social and political commentary.

All artists work mainly on canvas and their works differ in style and in scale. Mutheki who now resides in Johannesburg is grateful to be showing in KZN. He is overwhelmed with joy to once again be showing in a province that has given him so much and was instrumental in launching his colourful career.
